Description

Franck Larghetto from the String Quartet in D major (Organ)

César Franck (1822-1890) wrote his only String Quartet in 1889, one year before his death, in which he composed the famous “Trois Chorals” for organ.

The third movement, Larghetto, is in a style reminiscent of the first Choral with its chromatically coloured harmony sequences and this transcription for organ enriches the organ repertoire.  Except for a few bars where a more organ-like writing had to be found, the original writing is largely preserved.

The edition is supplemented by registration suggestions which are based on  those prescribed by Franck for comparable organ works developed on the late romantic French organ type created by  Cavaillé-Coll and used by Franck as an organist at St Clothilde in Paris.
