Description

Variations sérieuses op. 54 (Ped.) Edited and published by Martin Schmeding (32 pages)

Mendelssohn composed the “Variations sérieuses” in 1841 at the height of his mastery as a reaction to the “Variations brillantes” that were fashionable at the time and which often exhausted themselves in pure virtuosity. The cycle, which is one of the highlights of his entire instrumental work, lends itself to an organ transcription without any compromises or concessions, which Martin Schmeding undertook with a sure hand. Another great “organ work” by Mendelssohn that can be confidently placed alongside his sonatas. “Martin Schmeding’s careful editing shows that the variations can be played on the organ in their unaltered form.” [Music & Church Service 4/2010]
