Description
George Andrix’s new work Three Pieces for Organ (2002) betrays the composer’s love of blues, musical humour and of good natured music making. ln the first piece, Patterns, the more obvious harmonic changes in the bass line delineate a form that resembles a typical blues structure. Three simultaneously occurring rhythmic patterns are repeated throughout the piece, of which the bottom one is a kind of ground and the two upper ones are characterised by more subtle harmonic changes. The Trio is modelled after the Baroque trio sonata (two melodic lines and a bass line). Here melody dominates the Trio while the third piece, Fanfare, is predominantly harmonic. Fittingly for the finale of an organ work, it is antiphonal in structure, introducing contrasting dynamics and registrations which do not occur in the first two movements.
