Description

Symphonie improvisée (San Francisco, 1972) (Ped.) Reconstructed improvisation (Anthony Hammond)

Organists of all ages still face the difficult task of recording selected improvisations by the legendary Notre Dame organist based on the original recordings, thus preserving them in printed form for posterity and enabling them to be played again. This is what Anthony Hammond has done here, who, after five years of studying Cochereau’s life and work at the University of Bristol, has presented a recording of this five-movement symphony that Cochereau improvised in St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco. It is a relatively short but gripping work (approx. 23 minutes), which demonstrates in a condensed form the different facets of the exceptional artist Cochereau’s gift for improvisation.

Contents: Fanfare – Scherzo – Gigue – Lamento – Toccata.
