Franck Selected Organ Works
In this present age, we automatically associate César Franck’s works with organ music. The famous portrait painted by Jeanne Rongier of Franck (1822-1890) sitting at the console of the Cavaillé-Coll organ in “his” Sainte-Clotilde church will no doubt immediately spring to the mind of most organ enthusiasts. Largely unknown as a composer to his contemporaries, Franck had actually first gained a reputation in the organ world as a brilliant improviser at the organ. It was not until 1898 – a full eight years after his death – that his blind pupil Albert Mahaut performed his teacher’s twelve grand organ works in a connected series of concerts and with it, set in motion the enthusiastic reception of this part of Franck’s oeuvre, which in turn saw increasing sales figures for the printed organ collections.
This edition introduces a selection of his not inconsiderable output for organ.
