Description

Whilst scoring a TV play starring actor Robert Hardy, I was asked by him to write a short organ piece in memory of his recently deceased mother-in-law, the famous star of stage and screen Gladys Cooper. I accordingly composed this Pavane to provide a time of contemplation and remembrance during Miss Cooper’s Memorial Service at St. Paul’s, Covent Garden on December 18th, 1971.
Pavane has subsequently been arranged for flute, piano and optional cello, and also forms the slow movement of Norfolk Concerto for flute, harp and strings since it was in Norwich that Robert Hardy commissioned the piece. Paul Lewis
