Description

Dubois Complete Organ Works Volume IV: Organist at the Church “La Madeleine”

Théodore Dubois (1837–1924) was a conductor, organist, teacher, and one of the leading Parisian composers of the 19th century.  His contemporaries frequently compared him to Delibes, Widor and Lalo.  Yet he rarely turned to the musical language of his age, writing instead in a vein that reveals influences from Mendelssohn, Weber, Gounod, and the dramatic style of Berlioz.  Our edition is the first to present his organ music in an Urtext performance edition.

During his tenure at “La Madeleine” in Paris, Théodore Dubois composed a large number of organ works.  The fourth volume in our Urtext edition includes compositions for three manual: “The Douze Pièces Nouvelles” and the “Offertoire pour la fête de l’Ascension” (also known as Ascendit Deus) have a clear formal structure, and, like many other works by the master, reflect his desire to create works which could be performed equally well in church services or the concert hall.

Besides a detailed critical commentary in German, English, and French, the volume also contains a preface, facsimiles, and a catalogue of sources.
