J G Walther Organ Chorales

Johann Gottfried Walther (1684 – 1748) was a German organist and composer.  In 1702 at the age of 18 he became organist at the Thomaskiche in Erfurt, the town of his birth.  He later became Weimar town organist and a court musician.

He was most famous as complier of the Musicalisches Lexicon a dictionary of music and musicians and remains an invaluable source in the study of Baroque music.

A second cousin of J S Bach, Walther’s organ compositions were highly respected and included chorale preludes, variations and organ arrangements of concerti by other composers.
