17 Festive Organ Pieces

Who hasn’t heard of the organ system in Cologne Cathedral? Ever since the two high-pressure tubes were installed above the cathedral’s west portal in 2006, the cathedral organ ensemble has been one of the most famous in the world, and a live experience of it is a must for every organ lover. In recognition of the importance of these fanfares and the entire ensemble, 17 renowned composers from seven countries wrote compositions that are each individually inspired by the sound of the full-reed trumpet, chamade, fanfare or tuba, and that aim to bring these registers to life in their most beautiful form. However, it was important that all works can also be played on “conventional” instruments with three (some with two) manuals. The varying levels of difficulty of the pieces mean that even part-time organists will find feasible works for their practice. The result is a unique compendium of festive organ music that – starting from Cologne – can impressively enrich every solemn church service and every organ concert.
