Description
This plaintive chorale tune (based on Dachstein’s “An WasserflYssen Babylon”) is tenderly and expressively set as a partita for organ. Each variation has a single line of the Gerhardt text (found at the beginning of the variation) which is used as a motto. The lyric counterpoint and subtle colors of the first three sections beautifully reflect the introspective text, while the last variation, a spritely neo-baroque dance on a bright registration, exclaims the joy found in the statement “I am no more afraid of death.”
