Description

Fourth Symphony in D minor, op. 120 (Ped.) Arranged and published by Otto Depenheuer

Following the “Schumann Album” with individual pieces from various sources, an organ transcription of the great Romantic composer’s Fourth (chronologically: Second) Symphony is published here. The compactly formulated four-movement work is particularly well suited to organ transcription. Otto Depenheuer succeeds admirably in generating a “pure” organ setting from the orchestral score that does not suggest a piano reduction, but rather “fits well in the hand” and takes the peculiarities of the instrument into account. A valuable contribution to romantic symphonic transcription! “The arrangement of this main symphonic work by Schumann can be implemented surprisingly well on an appropriately designed organ. The road to a French organ symphony à la Guilmant or Widor does not seem far away. The piece is well-arranged in terms of playing technique and is pleasant to perform.” [Kirchenmusikalische Mitteilungen Erzdiozes Freiburg 68/2012]
