Description
There are a total of six new and diverse seasonal organ solos included in this album, which are based on six well-known and well-loved traditional Christmas carols. These pieces were composed in Tetbury, England in during June 2023.
It is intended that this collection of pieces (all of which vary considerably in style and difficulty), will display different tonal colours and dynamic contrast of the instrument and will also provide a source of enjoyment to both organists and listeners alike. The registrations that appear on each piece are only suggestions, as every instrument is different.
The pieces range from an energetic ‘Toccata on ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’ through to the more reflective Prelude on ‘The Holly and the Ivy’. It is hoped that this collection will become useful repertoire as voluntaries for services and as recital pieces. The pieces could either be combined to form suites, or played as individual pieces, as they are of contrasting form, dynamics, tempo and character.
This album is dedicated to Peter Thompson, Assistant Organist of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh, and Archdeacon of Armagh.
